Run for the Roses

“The essential JOY of being with horses is that it brings us in contact with the rare elements of grace, beauty, spirit and fire.” – Sharon Ralls Lemon

One of my favorite sporting events of all time is the Kentucky Derby run every first Saturday of May.  This is the 144th Run for the Roses and the inspiration for my table.  I chose this hand painted pillow as the icon for my blog.  The Kentucky Derby has been called “The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports.” Today is the day….

The garland of roses has more than 400 red roses sewn into a green satin backing.  The crown has a single rose pointing upward symbolizing the struggle and heart necessary to reach the Derby’s Winner’s Circle.

The fastest horse in Derby history was Secretariat in 1973 with a time of 1:59.40.

“I am still under the impression that there is nothing alive quite so beautiful as a horse.” – John Galsworthy

I am reminded of the importance of music on this special day.  The University of Louisville band plays My Old Kentucky Home for a crowd that some say is moved to tears even if not from Kentucky.

Horses seem to listen to the Great Musician…they have learned to recognize the sound of His still and gentle voice.  So must we..we trust and obey the Voice we know and love.

Last year’s winner was Always Dreaming.  This year’s favorite is Justify.  Very exciting!

As the horse instinctively knows what his next step will be, the same is true for us.  We belong to the Great Creator and our steps are never without purpose.

Thank you for galloping along with Maddie and me on Derby Day!  Dianne

  1. As you know…..Dianne being a Kentucky Girl this special post just steals my heart! Your table, place settings and and all could be right in Louisville today. Pillow and roses bring it all together. And precious Maddie is a natural. And your words of “Great Musician”……we surely know why “Horse Therapy” is # 1 with “Music Therapy” being # 2.

    1. Thank you Connie. Yes, Horse therapy sure works for me. I love going to the stables.

  2. Dianne, what a beautiful table. I so agree with Alycia, look at the exquisite plates and the gorgeous pillow! Maddie looks just like a natural and is a doll! Happy Sunday, dear friend!

  3. Thank you Pam. I am so blessed to get to take Maddie to the stables. What a joy.
